Fewer Aircraft, Unchanged Maritime Presence
Taiwan reported four Chinese military aircraft sorties, six naval vessels and three official ships around the island during the 24 hours ending at 6 a.m. today. The aircraft count was lower than yesterday’s twelve, while both vessel totals were unchanged.
The figures arrive amid an exchange over President Lai Ching-te’s National Day address. China’s defence ministry said on Sunday that recurring exercises around Taiwan were intended to deter independence moves and outside interference.
Taiwan’s foreign ministry urged Beijing to stop hostile rhetoric and abandon force or coercion to change the status quo, the Taipei Times reported today. It reiterated that Taiwan’s future should be decided by its people.
The distinction matters: political warnings and daily military detections are related context, but neither establishes that a new operation has begun. This morning’s lower aircraft count does not, by itself, demonstrate a lasting reduction in pressure or a change in Beijing’s intentions.
