Taipei Restricts Visits for Sun Yat-sen Commemoration
Taipei is drawing a boundary around Beijing’s planned Sun Yat-sen commemorations. On October 15, the Mainland Affairs Council said people already required to obtain government permission before visiting China would not receive approval to attend the events. It separately urged the wider public to avoid participation or jointly organizing commemorations with Chinese partners.
Spokesperson Liang Wen-chieh said no applications had yet arrived, according to the Central News Agency. The council described the celebrations as promoting unification and opposing Taiwan independence; that is Taipei’s assessment of their political purpose. Reuters reported on October 16 that Beijing had not detailed next month’s events and China’s Taiwan Affairs Office had not answered its request for comment.
The development concerns political symbolism and participation rules, rather than a reported military incident. Sun’s shared historical stature offers Beijing a platform for its national narrative, while Taipei is seeking to limit official involvement and discourage attendance.
