Last Festival Standing: Chateau’s Annual Beach Party in Kenting Is Spring Break Weekend’s Only Fest Left

This Spring Break weekend on April 4th, 5th and 6th, local and international DJs, dancers, jugglers, acrobats, an internet celebrity who’s appeared on America’s got talent, 300 bikers, and thousands of Taiwan’s craziest party people will descend on Kenting for Chateau’s 2019 Spring Break on the Beach.

This year’s international Acts include up and coming French DJ and Producer, Solberjum, the British born globetrotter, Swindali, HK based Mojito and Wes-P aka Mr Uekusa. Locally based acts include the self proclaimed “party king”, Famous, Perennial Glastonbury act, DJ Chamber and the queen of Southern Taiwan beach parties, MoneyDick.

It looks like it will be hotter and crazier than ever. Other event promoters, including the legendary Spring Scream indie band festival, have moved their events to later in the year. This leaves Spring Break on the Beach as the only music festival on the island over what has historically been one of the bigger party weekends of the year.

The lack of other events and a downturn in Mainland tour groups has driven down hotel rates in Kenting, which should encourage more people to take the trip down South.  And a very mild winter in Southern Taiwan is a sign that people in Taipei might decide to trade in their umbrellas for a healthy slathering of sunscreen to enjoy the long weekend.

Is this Taiwan’s first bike week? The island’s largest Harley Davidson riders association has decided to make the trip down to Kenting this year. 300 of their members have already signed on. This year sports cars that usually drive up and down Kenting main street may have competition for the road.

Mr Uekusa holds a large red cloth over himself and takes off all his clothes. He lays down and places a teacup over his naughty parts. Simon Cowell is speechless. Do a youtube search to see the rest… Or just come to Spring Break. We’re not totally sure what he’ll do on stage, but we’re excited and a little bit nervous.

What happens when you mix DJs, dancers, circus performers, bikers, and a japanese entertainer named Wes-P, who’s known for doing a naked version of the classic tablecloth trick? According to the team at On the Beach Promotions, “This year’s gonna be weird,”

The Battle for Marriage Equality in Taiwan

[中譯版請見以下] Taiwan Voice is proud to offer a platform for people in the community to share their voices. This piece was written in response to the current debate on marriage equality and its Christian opposition, and on how marriage equality would benefit Taiwan.
___

Hey, Straight People,

This coming weekend is a big vote, indeed. Since you have been letting foreign voices loudly oppose marriage equality, I wanted to add my own. Those other voices you have heard, both in your courts and on the street, are not representative of all foreigners, and certainly not of all Christians.

== About Those Christians ==

Taiwan, with bustling temples on every corner, is clearly not a Christian nation. Taiwanese society was founded on ideals from Taoism, Buddhism, and Confucianism, all three of which had very little to say about LGBT people. I humbly ask you to not let the small amount of Christians in Taiwan to have a disproportionate voice in this decision. I hope Taiwan can listen to its own history, heritage, and the majority of its people, rather than a handful of people with a history of intolerance.

We still have Christians in the US (my home country) who are adamantly against gay rights and gay marriage. They obsess on this, really, and they have fought passionately to keep gay people from enjoying basic human rights. The growing majority of Christians, however, are not like this, and they have opened up their churches to include gay people and their families.

The type of Christian here in Taiwan with their oppressive ideals have harmed countless people and families. They have made generations of gay people feel unwelcome to take part in society and have contributed to parents rejecting their own children. They have fought to keep us unprotected in our jobs and our homes, and they have even forced gay teenagers into conversion therapy, where many have taken their own lives. This feeling of being unwanted by society can shape a person’s life, as it did my own.

These Christians in Taiwan are not pulling any punches. They are going so far as to flat out lie about us. I have heard them say we like to have sex with animals and children, and many other untrue claims. Are there some gay people who engage in morally reprehensible and abnormal behavior? Of course there are. But there are a whole lot more straight people that do. This is not a gay problem, but rather a human problem.

They have also said if gay marriage were to be allowed, society would become more promiscuous and that more and more people would become gay. This ridiculous claim is in opposition to the opinions of 99.99% of scientists and doctors and shows their childish understanding of human development. The implication by these Christians that people can choose to be gay also implies that they, in turn, chose to be straight. If that is true, at one point they must have all wrestled with their sexuality, equally lured by both sexes, then ultimately deciding to be straight. Either that or they are just spouting lies and misleading claims.

They have also pointed out that gay people tend to lead unhealthy and destructive lives. This, unfortunately, is painfully true. All people pursue happiness, which is kind of the point of living. The majority of people find happiness through family or even in taking part in society. When loving, caring people are pushed out of their families or society because of their sexuality, they are forced to find happiness elsewhere and however they can get it. Being rejected by society and family is a horrible experience too many gay people have to go through, but yet—being human—we still search for happiness. Sometimes the only source comes from temporary and unhealthy sources. Can you imagine how much healthier so many young people would be if they had learned in school that they were normal, and knew from their parents that they were accepted?

== The Struggle ==

Another reason many of us may partake in destructive behavior is simply that many don’t know what else to do. Straight people have a model to follow: you are born, go to school, get a job, and then raise a family. That last part is where many straight people find their happiness and life’s purpose. Without a model to go by, gay people have to design our lives completely on our own, searching for a way to have a productive, healthy, and happy life.

Some gay people thrive in this freedom and use the opportunity to travel the world and deeply explore all that life can offer, taking risks that raising a family would otherwise prohibit. Others in the gay community, however, would prefer a more simple and—dare I say—normal life. They want to go to work and then come home to their own families, even ones with proud grandparents living with them. The want to enjoy the stability, contentment, and happiness that straight people take for granted. This just isn’t an option for gay people, unless of course one chooses to hide his or her true self for a lifetime, which brings about a completely different sort of misery.

Without a model to go by and without family being a future prospect, many are left floating in the wind, depressed, scared, and lost. These feelings of desperation are horrible, and many people will do anything to numb them. Escape in any form is the only option to living in desperation.

Do you want to know how to immediately end this destructive behavior? Show us some love.

This is something those opposing this decision simply can’t do, which is baffling. If you do choose to let a small minority of Christians hold sway in your decision whether or not to allow gay marriage, even over the many religious groups (some Christians included) that support marriage equality, please note that Jesus said absolutely nothing about gay people. Do you know what he did say? He said we should treat all people with love and dignity. He washed a prostitute’s feet and showed compassion for the poor and sick. If he were to come back today and look at this situation in Taiwan, he would see thousands of hurting people yearning for inclusion and love, and suffering from abuse and discrimination. He would also see scores of people using his name to continue the abuse and discrimination. If everything written about him in the Bible is true, he would certainly be very disappointed in this latter group, and would let them know about it in his very Jesus way.

Then, he would walk over to the colorful, festive, and pretty damned fabulous side of the street. He would hug all the drag queens, even letting them hold court for being some of the most fearless, bravest, and delightful people on the planet. Then he would probably walk over to the group of twenty-something men, complimenting them on their perfectly toned abs. Your body is a temple, after all. He would also give some props to the group of bears for being so comfortable in their own skin, and then give some comfort to a strung out, emaciated, and utterly lost young boy. Finally, he would ask the somewhat angry looking lesbian who had being staring at him with suspicion if she would like to go get a beer. She would, and she would smile.

== Benefit to Taiwan ==

Moving on, I also want to say that Taiwan becoming the first country in Asia to allow gay marriage would be so good for the nation. Not only would Taiwan’s status and fame grow, as forever being remembered as Asia’s leader in human rights, but it would also certainly draw more tourists and businesses to the friendly, democratic island. You know why else it would be good for Taiwan? It would soon have thousands and thousands of people joining society and contributing their immeasurable gifts and talents. Throughout history, gay people have held important roles as religious leaders, philosophers, and even advisors to Chinese emperors. Our function in society, and probably why our human species keeps pumping us out, has always been to take a step back from society and from this perspective decide how best we can help it. Even though in this current time our role has been (stereotypically) reduced to jobs in hospitality, design, fashion, or entertainment, our role has always been the same: We are here to help.

It is the role of gay people to wrap our big gay wings around the parts of society we love and want to see flourish. Whether we are a gay uncle who helps raise, inspire and educate his nephews and nieces, or even something so lofty as a writer or philosopher who, from her perspective, has gained insight on society that would be helpful for all to hear—whatever the form, we are here to help.

If you allow gay marriage, you would have thousands and thousands of people wrapping their wings around Taiwan and the great Taiwanese family we love so much – and help it be happier, smarter, and probably more fun. We would help Taiwan thrive. A society that nurtures its gay population, as is true with its women and children, would have that many more people sharing their talents, creativity and love for all. We would even show love to the very same people fighting to keep us oppressed.

The fact that you are even debating this issue is profound and historic, and it fills me with hope and a bit of joy. If, however, you choose to deny gay people this right, I will continue to love Taiwan, but will also join the thousands and thousands of people fighting for respect in the face of oppression. Year after year, generation after generation – we aren’t going anywhere. New gay children are being born every day, full of innocence, love, and an innate desire to help, and always ready to fight for their rights. Do not dismiss us, do not deny us, and do not underestimate us. It is up to you to decide what version of us you want amongst you. I implore you, do not waste this resource and do not waste this opportunity.

Sincerely,

Taiwan Voice

Thousands Set to Attend the Next Massive Free Beach Party at Cijin Island

The Spring Break organizers are continuing their collaboration with Sunset Beach Bar and the Kaohsiung Tourism Bureau to make Cijin Island’s gigantic free beach party even bigger. This time the festival will go two days, feature over 20 performers and add a second sound setup!

On Saturday, September 22nd and Sunday, September 23rd, On the Beach and Cijin Sunset Bar 旗津沙灘吧 will host their next massive beach event.

Music and activities start just after noon, including sporting events during daytime hours. There’s a full lineup of DJs and entertainers on stage until at least 10pm. Party goers won’t wanna miss the Bikini Dance Contest with a cash prize on stage a little after 8pm.

Getting to Cijin is pretty easy with Kaohsiung’s excellent public transport system. But many party goers, male and female alike, will don bikinis and ride public shared bikes directly to the Cijin Ferry Terminal as part of the Bikini Bike Ride event.

The sight of 100 or so bikini wearing cyclists is pretty sure to make an impression on people along the planned route from Brickyard to the ferry. Participants will enjoy some free drinks courtesy of Superbock when they arrive at the Free the Beach Venue a bit after 3pm.

For people who wanna skip the bike ride, an MRT ride to Xiziwan Station and a short walk to the Cijin ferry terminal is not too difficult. NSYSU students just have to walk 5 minutes from their campus to the ferry. Organizers are strongly urging people to travel to Cijin Island very early to avoid overloading the ferries that leave every 15 minutes or so and take about 7 minutes from the terminal to the island.

Free the Beach is totally Free, but attendees are asked to support the effort of the organizers and sponsors by purchasing drinks and food from the bar and official vendors.

Taiwan Tourism Bureau helps set up SunMoon Lake proposal for Israeli model Bar Zomer

Bar in Qipao outside Regent Taipei

Landing in Taipei on Taiwanese Valentine’s Day, Israeli supermodel Bar Zomer had no idea what the week had in-store for her. After being invited by the Taiwan Tourism Bureau (TTB) on a promotional familiarization tour of some of the the most popular sites and foods Taiwan has to offer, TTB had in fact worked in secret with Aviv Cohen (her boyfriend of 5 years), to plan the perfect proposal in Taiwan.

Starting with a “surprise” upgrade on her Cathay Pacific flight from Tel Aviv to Taipei was just the beginning. TTB also secured an upgraded room for the couple from Regent Taipei, one of the finest hotels in the country. The hotel also arranged for a photoshoot to take place for Bar and Aviv on their first day, in which they both wore traditional Taiwanese clothing – A Qipao dress for Bar, and a Changpao with Magua (Men’s robe and jacket) for Aviv.

Following the photoshoot, the couple were taken around parts of old Taipei, such as Dihua Street, Yongle Fabric Market and the Dadaocheng Dock, where Bar and Aviv saw the beautifully restored architecture and many of the stores that continue to operate in the traditions of generations past.

Bar and Aviv then walked around Ximending shopping district, arguably the most popular area in Taipei for young people and tourists alike. There they browsed the many vendors of hand-crafted gifts and fashion accessories, whose boutiques adjoin the Red House Theater. A recent trend that has swept the nation is the prevalence of claw machine stores, where players insert a coin to test their skill (or luck) in grabbing a prize. The young duo were quick to jump in, playing a dozen rounds before Aviv managed to win a Dragonball Z keychain.

After lunch, was a visit to Huashan 1914 Creative Park, one of Taiwan’s old factory areas that have been converted into trendy art spaces, cafes and retail. This was followed by a trip to Songshan Ciyou Temple, a decadent temple dedicated to the worship of Mazu, a sea goddess, then a walk around Raohe Street Night Market.

On the second day of Bar and Aviv’s trip, the couple took Taiwan’s High Speed Rail from Taipei to Taichung in less than an hour.

Taiwan is a paradise of beautiful landscapes, natural hot and cold springs, many beaches and stunning sites that make it a popular destination as a romantic getaway for people, while many others travel to and around Taiwan for their wedding photos. One particularly popular location for couples to take their photos is Sun Moon Lake in Nantou County. This picturesque place was chosen by Aviv as the site for his proposal to Bar. Working with The Lalu, a hotel that overlooks Sun Moon Lake, TTB booked an upgraded room for the lovebirds.

It was in the afternoon at The Lalu that Aviv’s proposal took place. Staging a photoshoot at one of the outdoor walkways at their hotel, the ring had been hidden in in a lotus in a pond at the hotel, so when Aviv removed his shoes and waded into the water to get it, Bar was naturally confused as to what was happening. However, coming out of the water and getting down on one knee made everything clear, and of course she said “Yes!”, releasing much of the stress Aviv had pent up trying to avoid her discovering the engagement ring he bought and hid with him throughout their journey! The newly engaged couple still have a few more days in Taiwan, which they can now fully enjoy under their upgraded relationship status.

After Proposal at Sun Moon Lake

Dr. Trust H.J. Lin, Director of the Taiwan Tourism Bureau’s office in charge of the Middle East had this to say about the “The Taiwan Tourism Bureau, and our partners Cathay Pacific, Regent Taipei and The Lalu all wish Bar and Aviv a long and happy life together, and invite other couples from Israel and around the world to come to Taiwan for their own trips of love, discovery and adventure.”

The Tattoo Guy gets beaten up in Cambodia

Tattoo Artist

Many of you probably remember last October’s tattoo star of Taiwan, the Tattoo Guy. In late 2017 he decided to tattoo in traditional mandarin characters the word Taiwan right on his forehead and a little island of Taiwan on his chin. We were informed by him personally earlier on this year that he is currently living in Indochina, reportedly South Cambodian coastal city of Sihanoukville. He describes his stay there as a ‘vacation’.

Sihanoukville

He has contacted us again last night telling one of our correspondents that he was attacked and severely beaten up. The apparent reason for the attack was the tattoo.

tattoo.jpg

Cambodia is currently experiencing a little tourists boom and many Chinese ‘businessman’ are setting up their establishments there. Those Chinese businessman refined their craft in China and now, alongside many henchmen, continue their artistry in Cambodia.

Screen Shot 2018-05-27 at 14.41.24

The tattoo guy was unlucky to meet this very part of Chinese society. This is what he wrote on a FB group:

“While on vacation in Cambodia , a group of Chinese got enraged simply because my tattoo said Taiwan, and a large group of ten of them attacked me with metal poles and I’ve lost a tooth and two teeth drastically pushed forward, now cannot properly close my mouth.

All that sparked it was I took my cap off for a second and one in the group read my tattoo ” Taiwan” and shouted ‘Taiwan zhong guo’ I simply replied ‘Taiwan Taiwan’ and they went insane grabbed poles and started attacking me.

In future not going to take my hat off, getting tattoo removed btw. as was a stupid drunken mistake getting it tattooed on my face, any other part of my body would have been fine but not the face, had four laser removals already so flag on chin gone almost already still need a few more for forehead.

Taiwanese be careful abroad stay safe ! Actually I’ve met many really nice Chinese here in Cambodia but obviously only takes one group that are not so friendly and have trouble.”

We were also contacted by a retired immigration lawyer who the Tatto Guy has apparently contacted. The Tattoo Guy was telling him that he was worried about being deported from Taiwan so he decided to go somewhere else till everything blows over. He was apparently on a 5 year probation but he managed to have a few court cases after and it was likely for him to be deported.

Below we post pictures we were sent last night. Viewer discretion is advised:

We were also sent a video:

Taiwan National Clean Up

Taiwan’s National Clean Up Event is in its second year running this coming May 20, 2018 and will take place in twelve locations across Taiwan:

Sponsored by Roxy and organized by Taiwan Adventure Outings (TAO) in partnership with several international and local enterprises, the event is set to make an even larger positive impact this year.

The national event aims to bring environmental awareness to those living in Taiwan, as well as provide fun outdoor activities for families and individuals both young and old.

Every month, for the last two years, TAO, an environmentally conscious adventure company, has been hosting free beach and forest clean up events, with the goal of bringing communities together for environmental conservation, education and engagement.

The average Taiwan resident consumes an estimate of 800 plastic bags a year.

Globally the equivalent of one garbage truck per minute is being dumped in the oceans. Taiwan’s unique geographical location means it is prone to waste washing up on its shores.

Taiwan aims to be free of plastic by 2030, and already the Environmental Protection Agency has banned single-use bags in seven industries this year. Local initiatives like the Taiwan National Clean Up are essential to provide awareness and education about everyday plastic consumption to realize these goals.

The public is welcome to host clean up events in their local area, or join in on existing ones by contacting TAO at the email below or at the Facebook event links above.

My cyberbullying experience and what it means for safety of kids online

Are your kids truly safe on social media?

By Quintin Dormehl

This is a question most parents have had to ask at least once or twice in their lives; and with everything going on recently, who can blame them? Dominating the headlines the past few weeks were the Facebook scandal where Cambridge Analytica mined data from Facebook users without their permission, as well as Melania Trump vowing to take on cyberbullying even thought she shares a roof with a person who constantly belittles and bullies people online. Even though Facebook and Twitter has been at the center of these controversies, it is important for parents to better understand how social media influences their children, especially with regard to cyberbullying.

I have been an avid user of social media from the days of MySpace until now. I have profiles on multiple platforms where I enjoy interacting with people from across the world, and share my life and special events with those who follow me. For the most part, I have enjoyed my experience, except for the occasional weird encounter, but this all changed 48 hours ago. I have recently started using Instagram, and as a whole it has been an interesting experience, but 48 hours ago a person using the pseudonym Ally started posting homophobic messages, that are clearly hate speech and of a bullying nature, on my profile.

“@therealprincecharming gays are cancers. And your body is full of F*** FAGGOT VIRUSES!!!!!!!!!” (1)

q cyberbullying article 3

“@therealprincecharming What? You want to let viruses like gay spread all over the world. I mean you can say gay is the right of every human being and in a few years you will say pedophile is the right of every human being. legalize something sin and wrongdoing? you are really sick” (2)

Cyberbullying instagram comments

Being an adult, I can fend for myself, and I do not put too much stock in what people like this think about me or my lifestyle, but I started wondering how these kinds of things influence younger social media users. My friends and I reported the user and the comments to Instagram, and I waited to see how long Instagram would take to help a user that was being bullied. To my surprise, 15 hours later, my friends and I got messages from Instagram stating:

“therealprincehcharming, thank you for taking the time to report cijeah24’s account. While we reviewed the account you reported for hate speech or symbols and found it does not violate our Community Guidelines, reports like yours are an important part of making Instagram a safe and welcoming place for everyone.” (2)

Cyberbullying reported

Saying that I was disappointed with Instagram’s response to cyberbullying would be the understatement of the year. Their lack of taking responsibility for their users could have real world consequences. Peng Hsin-y, aka ‘Cindy’ (a Taiwanese celebrity), committed suicide in April 2015 after being bullied online.  A study done by the Child Welfare League Foundation (CWLF) in 2015 found that “approximately 74.1% of students considered online bullying a problem [and only] 43% of bullying victims sought help from website managers, teachers or professional counselors; 42% reacted by retaliating.” (3)

Statistics like these paint a dark picture of the world our youth is entering. According to the Instagram help website, Instagram requires their users to be aged 13 or older (4) but according to the Instagram application, it is “rated for 12+” (5). Even though this is a minor detail, how can we trust a company like Instagram to keep our children safe, when they can’t even agree on a common age across their own platform? The reason why age restrictions are so important is because young people absorb things differently than adults do. Whereas adults might brush off some negative comments, young people sometimes internalize it, which could lead to depression, anti-social behavior or even thoughts about committing suicide. How are social media companies keeping our youth safe?

I tried to contact Instagram via their own medium which didn’t work, so then I tried contacting them through Facebook by posting on their fan pages as well as tagging them in a comment with screenshots of the hate speech that I received. I have yet to receive a response other than the one mentioned earlier.

If there was an infant car seat out there that only worked 70% or 80% of the time, would you still take the risk of letting your child be strapped into it? If your answer is no, then why would you allow your child to be on social media, such as Instagram, where his/her mental wellbeing could be in danger? “Seven per cent of young social network users said they had been bullied on the Facebook-owned photo app.” (6) Even if your child gathered the courage to report the person bullying him/her, then what is the guarantee that Instagram would resolve the matter in a timely manner? Speaking from experience, I would not bet on it.

If someone is being bullied, regardless age or sex, it is the company’s responsibility to step in and put a stop to it. Unfortunately, this is not always the case. So I will ask you again, “Are your kids truly safe on social media?”

Spring Break on the Beach carries on the Tradition of Kenting Music Festivals

Every year, several hundred thousand young people travel south to Taiwan’s premier beach town for the long holiday the first weekend of April. Many thousands will attend Spring Break on the Beach, at Kenting’s only 5 star Beach resort, Chateau

On Friday, April 6th and Saturday, April 7th, 2018, On the Beach and Chateau Hotel and Resort will host Taiwan’s biggest beach party. Gates open at 2pm. Spring Breakers will be able to enjoy two days at the most beautiful Beach resort in Taiwan, organized sports, world class sound and lighting, international and local performers, and three hours of open bar.

For over 20 years, the youth of Taiwan have flocked to Kenting for a long weekend of music, drinks and partying. Spring Break on the Beach has continued this tradition the last 5 years with an average annual attendance of over 10,000 people. Taiwan’s growing interest in beach culture has fueled the festival’s rise and made it consistently one of the most memorable parties of the year.

Organized sporting events will include ultimate frisbee, beach soccer, american football, volleyball and brazilian jiujitsu. During the day DJs will spin latin, hip hop, reggae and other beach jams. Guests can swim in one of several swimming pools overlooking the beach and take advantage of an open bar serving bottomless beer and cocktails from 3pm to 6pm both days.

After the sun goes down, the energy will rise and DJs and dancers will take the party up a notch. This year, the organizers are bringing DJ B Jones, a staple of the world’s most famous beach party scene. She has held residencies at Ibiza’s Pacha, Mambo, KM5, Nassau Beach Club, Blue Marlin and Privilege.

Rounding out 2018’s festival bill are over 50 local and international performers, including ICRT personalities DJ Chamber and Famous, Elektro Taipei’s Double G, Triangle Taipei’s DJ Crosscutz, 18TC’s Alex36, Brickyard resident international lady of mystery, DJ MoneyDick, and many others.

Party goers have a chance to be part of the entertainment too. Each night at 8pm, the infamous Bikini Dance Off gives participants, both male and female, 30 seconds to impress the crowd. The winner receives a cash prize of NT$10,000. Contestants are reminded not to break Taiwan’s public decency laws in their quest to impress.
Early bird tickets are sold out. But presale tickets to Spring Break are still available at all 711 and Family Mart locations through their automated ticketing kiosks, online at KKTIX, and at partner venues like Triangle and Elektro in Taipei, 18TC in Taichung and Brickyard in Kaohsiung. A two day pass costs NT$1500 and one day passes are available at Ibon and Famiport for NT$1100.
